Work At Home – A Home Business Vs A Work-At-Home Job

The at-home work force is increasing exponentially every year. As more and more people begin working from home, the lines and definitions between jobs and a business are beginning to get blurred. But, there is a difference between a home business and a work-at-home job. Keep reading for a clear outline of these basic distinctions.

Basically, a home based business is any business where the primary office is located in someone’s home – usually the owner’s. In fact, most companies start out this way – from simple tinkering in the garage to typing away in the spare room. From Microsoft to Ben & Jerry’s, many successful business got their start the home-based way. If you are planning on launching your own home business and being your own boss, make sure that it’s legal. While most zoning laws won’t crack down on a basic home office, they will lay down the law when it comes to a noisy auto repair business, illegal daycare or opening a store-front on your lawn.

Once your home-based business begins to earn income, you will need to begin thinking about registering your business, filing business taxes, and essentially running your home-based business in a legal and professional manner.

Meanwhile, a work-at-home job is a little different. Unlike a business where you manage yourself, in an at-home job you are responsible to a supervisor. Whether you do legal transcription, bookkeeping, fund raising, customer service, programming, or web design – if you are working solely for an outside business, a business with offices outside of your home, then you are working an at-home job. A work-at-home job may allow you to direct your hours and workspace, but the essential control and direction of the business will be out of your hands and that is the primary difference between a home business and a work-at-home job.

Work At Home Assembly More A Money Drain

Before you send for information on an opportunity to build things at home that come with a guaranteed customer base, ask yourself why this offer is being made online and not given to people in the same neighborhood as the business. Understand there be a charge to send the pieces and parts to you as well as a charge to send the finished products back to the company hiring you to assemble the products. Why they don’t simply hire people in the neighborhood is because that is not where the money is.

The pitch is usually about assembling products at home, that anyone can do. They will promise to send all the parts along with a list of companies that will be willing to buy the products you build. If you pay for the parts, assemble the products and sell directly to the buyer, you can keep the profits. Sounds too good to be true, because it is. Once you pay for the parts and they arrive at your house, you will likely find that one or more specialty tools may be needed to put the items together. Tools that aren’t usually found in everyone’s toolbox.

However, you’re in luck because this same company also sells the tools, typically at a ridiculous price, along with shipping but it just seems like a minor inconvenience and a cost of doing business to get into the assembly business. After all, you’ve told that if companies like your work, there will be plenty more business just waiting for you.

You build the first few items, to the exact specifications in the plans and start to send letters to these waiting buyers who may request a sample of the product you put together. After you send it in, postage at your expense of course, you will probably receive a letter with one of two usual rejections. Either it does not meet their specifications for one reason or another, or they have seen a huge increase in supply or a sudden downturn in demand. Remember, you probably were only one of several thousand who answered the ad.

There is a good chance that most of the companies on the list will have the same answer to your inquiries or maybe one or two will offer to take the inventory off your hands for a fraction of the cost that you have in them. Your choices seem limited by selling them at a loss and consider it a valuable lesson, or you try to sell them on your own. You can congratulate yourself for paying top dollar for low-quality materials and tools so you can build something no one wants.

There are companies offering legitimate assembly work and before you buy any parts and new tools, verify the potential buyers are legitimate and talk with them directly concerning their specifications. If the company will not give you names and numbers of these resellers, don’t give them any money.

Work At Home Opportunities For Free, Doesnt Mean It May Not Come With A Cost!

Despite what the advertisements may guarantee, discovering a free work at home system may be next to impracticable in numerous lines of work. Whereas lots of businesses advertise free work from home opportunities, their description of free may not be the identical as yours.

Many of the free work at home opportunities are nothing more than franchise opportunities, in which you put your name on their page and promote it. In many ways, this makes sense. The business has spent lots of cash and lots of time developing their web site, along with the replication software enabling you to have the same website with your name on it. They have also spent a lot of time and money developing the service or product mix for sale on that site.

Similar to any traditional franchise, a new entry in the field can take advantage of the name recognition, products and reputation of the existing company. The existing business is selling the exclusive use of their name and products, in hopes that more customers will be the result.

The main trouble with internet businesses is that clientele come from all over the world and if there are 1,000 people with 1,000 websites that all look exactly the same, getting people to visit your site so that you get credit for sale is where cost may enter the equation. Sure, you can set up a free blog site and talk about nothing but the products on your site, using your unique URL to draw people in. You may actually get one or two people reading your blog. Maybe they will visit the site. This is free.

If you ask any individual who has achieved the smallest amount of success in business, internet or traditional, they will tell you that advertising or marketing is required to get people to your website or into your business. Without it, the only people who will know about your online business are you and your service provider, and they wont care as long as you pay your fees.

In order to improve your pages ranking, you may have to spend some quality time and money to make your site more eye-catching to internet search engines. In business, time is money, so your free work at home opportunity is getting more expensive as you go along.

Furthermore, lots of the companies offering free websites, amazingly also can suggest a marketing company to help you get your site noticed. That will not be free, but the returns from increased sales may pay for the advertising. Of course, the company, whose free website you promote, is going to be an affiliate of the marketing company and will receive a percentage of your outlay for the advertising. While there may not be anything illegal or even unethical about these preparations, you should be conscious of what you are getting into before you spend the first dime.

Work From Home

Working from home has become the dream of a large part of the working class.  People want more flexibility than their nine to five jobs offer.  They want to stay home with their kids, set their own hours, attend their children’s sporting events and recitals.  The chance to work from home is something that more and more people desire.  One way to have it all is to work from home and it can be a great plan for many people.

Work from home opportunities aren’t for everyone.  Some people are not cut out to work from home.  They need the pressure of a boss and a deadline.  They need the support and face to face contact that a normal nine to five job gives.  Some people are not self starting.  They do not have the drive to set their own goals and work towards them steadily.  There are always decisions that have to be made about the way you allocate your time.  It may be difficult for some people to make those time decisions.

People who are cut out to work from home can get their work done on time without someone telling them to do so.  They can manage their time and be their own boss. You do not want to quit a job you are good at or make good money at for something that will not work for you.

A work from home opportunity is something that people should really research before jumping into it.  You need to know first how much money the opportunity will bring in.  Will you be able to afford to work from home?  What will you have to sacrifice if anything to work from home?  Is the opportunity something that will grow and build a bigger income over time, or is it a dead end with no opportunity for growth?

Working from home offers many things for many people, but it is not right for everyone.  Make sure that working from home is the right path for you before you take it.

Work From Home And Be The Master Of Your Own Destiny

Lots of people dream of being able to work from home. How does one go about it and what are some of the qualities you need to become a success? Read on to find out some of the things you will need to do and some of the traits you need to possess if you are determined to work from home.

Are You Self Motivated?

Those people who want to work from home need self motivation. Without a boss to answer to, you will need to get yourself moving and take the responsibilities for even the most unpleasant tasks. This is a serious consideration for those who want to take the plunge and work from home.

Are You a Patient Person?

It may take some time for your business to turn a profit. Are you one who is willing to put in the hard work and wait for your business to take off? You may need to live very carefully until you have established yourself when you decide to work from home and this is especially true if you have no other source of income. Be patient and work hard and all of your efforts will soon pay off.

Being able to Adapt and Be Flexible

For those who are coming from a corporate environment, it may be hard to lose your status and the help of others who completed and aided you in many of your tasks. They may have taken care of the more mundane side of business which left you free to take care of the creative end. You need to be able to wear many hats when you work from home. You will need to be flexible, learn new tasks and skills and be able to adapt to many different situations. If you think you can accomplish this, you will be a success when you work from home.

Think about the Realities of Your Financial Situation When You Seek to Work from Home

There is a financial reality that must be taken into account when you decide you want to work from home. Things such as retirement benefits, health insurance and paid vacations are a thing of the past unless you make the arrangements for yourself. If you expect your business to start off slowly, how do you plan to make your living until you are seeing some return on your investment? You will have to make your own plans for retirement too. You may need to speak to a financial advisor once you have established yourself in order to take care of such details as well as the best health plan available you can afford.

If you plan to take your family on vacation when you work from home, this will have to be carefully planned as well. You will not have your vacation time or sick days to rely on and will have to save money if you intend to travel for pleasure.

Are You Ready to Work Long and Hard?

Getting a new business off the ground takes long hours and lots of hard work. If you expect to sit home on your laurels and make money, you are sadly mistaken. Working from home will more than likely require you to work longer and harder than you have before. The bright side to this is that you are doing all this work on your own behalf and not for the benefit of someone or something else.

Work From Home Business Requires Serious Effort

There are various circumstances that cause people to consider starting a work from home business and there are just as many of those businesses available. What you need to ask yourself is whether you want a work from home business or a work at home business. The difference is the type of work you will be doing, but either way it should be something you are good at doing as well as something you enjoy doing.

Typically, most work from home business operations involves service-related jobs such as plumbing, electrical or some other form of home improvement. Consultants often develop a work from home business and this type of work can be done through telecommuting while working for someone else. While salaried work from home positions are few and far between, they are available on a very limited basis.

There are many advantages to a work from home business, beginning with a low overhead and being able to use a portion of your home’s operating expenses as a tax deduction. There are specific rules governing business use of your home so be sure to check with a tax advisor before claiming it on your income taxes. If you end up being ineligible for this deduction it could cost you dearly in the form of penalties and interest.

By working from home you can usually establish your own hours and your own dress code, however a professional appearance will be mandated during the times you meet with customers or prospective clients. You will also have to have the motivation to get up and work from home even on those days you really do not feel like it, just as though you were working for someone else in their office. You have to show up in order to get your work done.

If you are thinking of working from home, and you still have a full-time job, before walking away from it you may want to work from home on a part-time schedule to learn what it is going to take to solicit work and get it done on time once you get the contract. Depending on the type of work you do, if it involves having clients visit your home office, you will also have to consider the cost of liability insurance to protect you in the event of injury on your property.

You will also have to remember that when you work from home you are generally treated as a contract employee and all matters pertaining to taxes will be your responsibility. Money paid to your self will require certain tax forms and your income taxes will have to be paid on a regular basis, just like any other business does for their employees.

Work Smarter, Not Harder – The 4 Keys To A Lower Maintenance And More Productive Online Business.

Here’s something that most online business owners struggle with – Working too hard for not enough return. Eve when the return’s are good, the hours can be grueling.

As an Internet marketing mother, I can’t afford to be sitting at my computer 24/7. I chose to run an online business because I want to be home with my kids, but at home glued to a computer screen isn’t like being at home.

Even if you don’t have a kid or a spouse, a business should not become your entire life.
It’s a recipe for burn out and a dismal life that revolves around a computer. At first, building your business and working really may seem exciting, but then you look up and realize there’s nothing else in your life.

So, how do you work smarter and not harder? In other words, how do you make more money with less personal time invested in your business.

To me, in comes down to 4 key points:

• Value your time
• Leverage the strengths and time of others
• Implement Passive Income Models into your Business
• Don’t be afraid of technology

Here’s some more thoughts on each of those:

1. Value Your Time:

You need to set and limit your working hours. You probably run your business, so you can stay home with your family&/or have more freedom. Well, being a prisoner to your computer doesn’t do either of those things for you.

In addition, when you limit your work time, you are more productive. If you have only 3 hours to get work done, you’re more likely to stay focused and do what you need to do. If you have set aside the whole day to work, you’ll probably slack off and hang out at forums, check your stats endlessly or find other distractions. Sorry to say – that’s NOT working.

2. Leverage The Strength & Time of Others:

Don’t think of yourself as a solo entrepreneur…think of yourself as a team. You can leverage the strength and time of others by:

- Outsourcing: Never try to do it all yourself!

- Partnering with others reaching the same target market as you: Your competition doesn’t need to be your enemy. Make them your partners instead!

- Recruiting and training an affiliate force: Just setting up the script for your affiliate program isn’t enough…set up a stellar program instead.

- Being part of mastermind group that shares business strategies and experiences.

3. Implement Passive Income Models Into Your Business:

Outsourcing and having your own well-managed affiliate program are ways to generate passive income. Other ways to add more passive income to your online business are:

- Join affiliate programs: You don’t have to fulfill all the orders and provide customer support.

- Learn search engine optimization (SEO): Search engine optimization is an excellent source of highly-targeted traffic for your website. Just think, people enter a keyword phrase for something they want and voila, they find you.

- Implement pay-per-click strategies: Just like with search engines, you can get highly-targeted traffic to your website, but you have to pay for it. But setting up a cost-effective and profitable campaign can do wonders for your business. Try Adwords of Yahoo Search Marketing.

- Use autoresponders: Effectively automate your follow-up process with our prospect and customers.

- Backend Sales & Upsells: When someone is already going to buy from you once, they’re more likely to buy more. Make sure you make extra offers.

4. Embracing Technology:

This one might be tough for some non-technical people. Honestly, I’m not very technical and I get intimidated by technology…but I do know that if I can automate something in my business, it saves me time and money. That’s why I have a programmer on hand to help me with stuff like this. I don’t have to implement the technology myself. I just use it to my advantage in my business.

Some uses of technology can include…but the possibilities are ENDLESS

* Autoresponders
* Shopping carts
* Membership sites
* Automating content addition to your sites
* Making customer/prospect management easier and more profitable
* Customer feedback, comments, reviews
* Affiliate program
* Tracking advertising and split testing

So please, stop doing so much work! Your business, family and friends will thank you for it!

Working At Home: Getting Things Organized At Home

It is not always easy to divide your time between caring for the kids and working on your home business. With your kids running around the house or following you around asking 20 questions per minute, it is not always easy to get things done at home. If you really want to get something done and earn some money from your home business, you should learn to manage your work schedule. To help you get something done around the house, here are some tips for you.

Ensure Cooperation From The Family

You cannot work well if your family will not cooperate. To make sure that everyone understands that you are working, call a family meeting and explain the situation to the kids. If you have kids who are old enough to understand the situation, make sure that you talk to them and enlist their help in keeping the little ones away form your work area. Older kids are responsible towards their younger siblings and you should encourage them by giving them the task to keep their younger siblings out of your way during your work time.

If you do not have older kids who could help keep the other kids out of your work station, you better put a lock and key into your office to ensure that no one can get inside the room and mess with your work. What if you only have a corner of the house as your office? How can you keep everyone out? If it is impossible for you to keep everyone out of your work station, make sure that you put your work in a safe place after you are done. Be sure to have filing cabinet with a lock where you can store important files. Do not leave anything on top of your table if you do not want to end up losing them or have your little artist doodle on your files.

For your computer, make sure that you put on a password that is difficult for your kids to crack.  If you are using a desktop computer, be sure that you cover the screen, keyboards and CPU every time you finish working so that your little kids will not be tempted to tinker with it. For you laptop, put it inside your filing cabinet or somewhere else safe when you are not using it. Always remember that when it comes to your computer and your files, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

If you have installed a special phone for your home business, make sure that everyone understands that the phone is strictly for business. If you have teenagers in the house that couldn’t put the phone down for hours, make sure that they understand that your office phone is off limits. It will not do you any good if your clients cannot reach you because your phone is always busy.

Working At Home On The Internet – Picking A Topic

This can be harder than it sounds and is probably the most important decision you’ll make with your work at home internet business. There are two major considerations in choosing what your website will be and both are extremely important. Some will argue that one is more important than the other, but in they end they are equal.

The first thing to consider when picking a topic for your site is picking a topic you enjoy. What’s that have to do with making money online you may ask? Well, if you don’t like it, you won’t spend time on it. Yes, the desire for money will help some, but your success online is in direct proportion to how much time you spend on it. Quite simply, if you like something you will spend more time on it. Don’t ignore my advice here, be sure to identify your hobbies and interests and pick one of them to make a site about. The more popular the better.

I gave a hint at the end of that last paragraph about the next consideration. It’s popularity. Let me explain exactly what that means in this context as it’s a little tricky. To give you the full story though I have to jump ahead a little.

Once your site is up and running you’ll need to get some ads on it. Online advertisers pay for visits to their site and exposure of their ads. They amount they pay varies wildly based on topic and the number of bids for your ad space. Yes, that’s right, advertisers will bid for ad space on your site. It’s very much like an auction, the highest bidders ad is the one that gets shown. So, the more popular your site (and topic) the more advertisers will bid on it and the more money you will make from the ads.

There’s a catch to this though. Not really a catch I guess but more of a flip side. Your site is probably not the only one out there on it’s topic. There’s probably quite a few websites out there that will be in direct competition with you. That’s OK though, remember McDonalds and Burger King. The down side though is that the more popular your topic the more choices advertisers and web surfers will have. This has the effect of lowering the amount of money you will make.

As you can see, knowing how popular your topic is is very important. There are two ways I recommend in researching this. One is our free keyword search tool located at the work at home site referenced below. You can enter up to three keywords or phrases into it and it will show you how popular they are as well as list similar ones. It’s a very useful tool. The second way is a pay way but it offers much more. It will show who is using the keywords and what other keywords they are using. You can put a website in and the will show you what keywords they are using, how popular they are and even how successful they are. It’s an amazing service and worth every penny. You can check it out there as well.

Back to picking your topic. The trick is to pick one that you like and is popular, but not to popular. Once again this is an important step, but don’t take to long on it. There’s still a lot of work ahead.
